  Chapter one Better times

Cole is walking through a forest. It's very dark outside which makes it hard for him to see in the distance. He looks around, but all he can see are trees and bushes. Visibly confused and slightly in panic, he starts to run and shouts, “Anybody here?! Anybody?!”

But no response. He keeps on running and running until he cannot run any longer. He falls on his knees and while breathing heavily, he looks up at the sky and shouts, “What is going on?! Where am I?! Please, somebody, help me!”

Right at that moment, he sees the full moon appearing from behind a cloud. It's shining so bright that the whole place lights up. When he looks back down again, he sees that a very big rock has appeared in front of him! Visibly confused, he slowly gets up, walks over to the rock and touches it. Right at that moment, he hears a wolf howling, and it's close! He immediately turns around and looks everywhere around him, but sees nothing! Once again, a wolf howls! And this time it's even closer! He quickly tries to climb up the rock but then, a very big brown wolf with glowing green eyes and long sharp teeth jumps on top of it! Cole falls down and is staring at the wolf with disbelief! It looks like a monster, but at the same time, it looks beautiful. The wolf stares Cole in his eyes while growling and licking his teeth! Cole slowly gets up and takes a couple of steps backward.

“I'm not here to hurt you alright? So please don't hurt me either,” Cole says.

But strangely enough, the more he looks the wolf in its eyes, the safer he feels. The wolf stops growling and bows his head down. Cole walks a bit closer and slowly sticks out his hand towards the wolf its head.

Right before he reaches it, the wolf lifts its head up, sticks its chest out and howls very loud! Cole takes a couple of steps back but then hears someone shout, “It’s about time! Now let’s finish this once and for all!”

Cole turns around and sees Conrad walking, out of the bushes, towards him and the wolf! Conrad rips off his dress shirt and his eyes start to glow bright red! His teeth and nails grow as he runs towards them! He changes into a big shadow werewolf, shows his teeth and jumps towards Cole! Cole puts his arms in front of his face, closes his eyes and screams! But then it gets really quiet. He puts his arms down, opens his eyes and sees that he’s standing in the middle of the throne room! Dracula, who is seated on the throne with a black suit and a red tie, says with a smirk, “Welcome, Cole.”

“Who the hell are you?! And why am I here?!”

Dracula stands up, walks over to Cole and replies, “All these questions, just take a knee, Cole.”

“Hell no!” Cole says, but then somehow, he takes a knee! He tries to get up but can’t! “How is this possible?! What is going on?!”

With a smirk, Dracula raises his left hand and replies, “Kiss the ring.”

“What?! I’m not kissing your ring! Who the hell are you?!”

“I am the new king! Now, don’t make me force you, Cole! Pledge your loyalty to your new king!”

Right at that moment, everything starts to spin and Cole replies, “Yes, my king.” He then slowly leans his head forward, closes his eyes and kisses Dracula’s ring!

Dracula looks up and starts laughing loudly! “And now, this world is mine!”

Cole wakes up and immediately sits up on his bed! Vanessa, who is lying next to him, slowly wakes up because of him and asks, “Are you alright? What happened?”

Cole takes a couple of deep breaths, wipes the sweat off his forehead and replies, “Yeah, sorry.” He then lies his head back down on his pillow again.

Vanessa looks at him and asks, “You sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. I just had a strange dream again, that’s all.”

“What happened in your dream then?”

“It’s just… really strange. I was back in the throne room again and a guy in a suit asked me to kiss his ring. He said that I had to pledge my loyalty to him or something because he apparently was the new king, but I wasn’t planning on doing that of course. So I told him, no, but right at that moment, my body just went down on one knee and everything started to spin. I felt like I was wasted or something, but after that, I just kissed his ring. I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t control myself anymore.”

With a smile, Vanessa replies, “Wow, that’s just so romantic. Is there something you want to tell me? Maybe something I should be worried about?”

  “Funny, really funny.”

“Oh, come on, I’m just kidding.”

“I know,” Cole replies, as he gets up and puts on a shirt and a pair of jeans.

Vanessa sits up on the bed and asks, “You don’t want coffee and breakfast first before you go to work again?”

“No, thank you. David’s grandpa has plenty of coffee and food ready. I’m sure the rest of the pack is already working, so I should head out as well.”

“Okay, well, then not. But do you already know who brought all the wood, glass, and construction tools?”

“No, I still have no clue. But whoever it was, I’m very thankful,” Cole replies, as he walks over to Vanessa and gives her a kiss on her forehead. “Alright, see you soon?”

“Yes, but I still need to get some more sleep first. It’s way too early for me.”

“Alright, that’s fine. See you soon,” Cole replies with a smile.

Cole then walks out of his bedroom and Vanessa says, “Good luck!”

Cole walks downstairs, puts on his shoes, goes into the kitchen to grab the key of his car, and then walks outside, gets inside of his car, that is standing underneath the carport, and drives towards Brown’s Creek.

A short while later, he reaches Brown’s Creek and parks his car next to the road. A lot of the houses and shops in Brown’s Creek have already been built up again, and there are also a lot more houses being built. Cole walks over to David’s grandpa, who is standing next to the road with a table in front of him with coffee and bread on it. “Good morning, Cole! How are you?”

“Pretty good,” Cole replies, as he grabs a cup of coffee from the table. He takes a sip and looks at all the people, from his pack, that are working on building the houses. “It’s starting to look good! Houses are made bigger and we’re even expanding. Brown’s Creek is going to be big by the time we finish.”

“That is true. It’s only been a week since the fight with Conrad, but we’re making a lot of progress really fast. I guess werewolves work a lot faster and harder than humans do,” David’s grandpa replies with a smile. “But, I’m still wondering about something.”

  “And what may that be?”

“Well, I’m wondering who gave us all these
materials and tools.”

“Me too, but I have no clue, to be honest. All I know is that the person who did this is very generous.”

“That is true. Oh well, there is a possibility we might never find out. But, have you heard anything from James already? Regarding your mother’s funeral?”

“No, nothing. I don’t know what he’s doing or where he is, but I hope he reaches out to me soon.”

“I hope so too. Your mother deserves a beautiful funeral.”

“I know, and it might sound crazy, but I feel like it would also give her rest and peace. You know, when we bury her next to my father.”

“I understand, and I think you’re right. Once you bury the body of a person who passed away, the soul of that person will become truly free and will be at peace. Although, that’s what I believe.”

Then David, with dust all over his clothes and tools in his pocket and behind his belt, comes walking up and says, “Good morning, boss. Everything alright?”

“Yes, I’m good. But please, stop calling me boss,” Cole replies with a smile.

“Alright, sorry. Anyway, I came here to tell you that John is on his way over here. Don’t know what he wants, but I thought I would give you a heads up.”

“Thanks for letting me know, anything else? How is everyone holding up?”

“No, nothing more. And everyone is good, we’re working hard and making a lot of progress. I’m sure that soon we can all live here. But alright, in order for that to be possible I also have to get back to work again.”

“That’s fine, and be sure to tell everyone that they can take as many breaks as they like.”

“Will do!” David replies, as he walks off again.

Right at that moment, John comes driving up in a police car. He parks his car next to Cole’s car and David’s grandpa says, “Alright, I will leave you two alone for a moment. Talk to you soon.”

Cole nods and David’s grandpa walks away. John gets out of his car, puts on his hat and walks over to Cole. “Good morning.”

“Good morning, John. I hope we didn’t do anything wrong.”

John laughs and replies, “No, I’m not here to arrest you. Don’t worry.”

“So, may I ask why you came here?”

John looks around and replies, “It’s starting to look great. I can’t believe that you and the rest of these guys build this all up so fast. Who are these people anyway? I have never seen them here before.”

“Mostly family members from the people that died here, and the others are people who are looking for a peaceful place to live.”

“Then they are at the right address, but let’s just hope that this time the psychopaths stay away from this town.”

“I’m sure they will, but did you find out who did it already?”

“Sadly, no. But trust me, I’m still on it. Anyway, how did you get all these materials? And it’s a miracle that you even got permission to build here. And, where is your mother? How is she doing? Haven’t seen her for a while.”

“Yeah, it is a miracle, but I don’t know. About six days ago a couple of big trucks showed up with all these materials and tools, but even they didn’t know who send it. And my mother is still in Paris, but I heard that she will come back soon.”

John nods and is visibly confused. “But, if you don’t mind, I have to get back to work,” Cole says.

“That’s fine, but I do want to discuss one more thing. Since the police station is located miles away from here, I was thinking about building one here, with your help of course. I think it would be better for the protection of this town. And it would also give these people a peace of mind, knowing that the police is close.”

“I agree, so let’s do it, why not. Just let me know where you want it to be located and we will build it.”

“I will, I still have to discuss it, but I will get back to you soon. Alright then, I have to go again. Have a nice day,” John replies, as he walks back to his car.

  “You too, bye.”

John then gets in his car and drives off. Cole finishes his coffee, grabs a piece of bread and grabs a hammer and some other tools that are laying underneath the table. He then walks over to one of the houses, that is still under construction, and starts helping David and the others out.

A couple of hours later, Vanessa came to Brown’s Creek as well and brings coffee to Cole, who is working on the main floor inside one of the houses. Cole grabs the cup of coffee and Vanessa waves to David, who is working on the second floor. “Wow, you guys work really fast. And, David, I got some coffee for you as well!” Vanessa says.

“I will come get it soon, thank you!” David shouts.

Cole gives Vanessa a kiss and says, “Thanks. And yes, we’re making good progress.”

“Yes, I can see that. But don’t work too hard, alright? But are you coming soon? Because I made some sandwiches.”

With a smile, Cole replies, “Don’t worry, and yes, I will go back to the house with you.” Cole then looks at David and shouts, “David?! Could you come down for a moment?”

“Coming!” David replies, as he comes walking down the stairs. He grabs the cup of coffee and asks, “Is there something wrong?”

“No, but I’m going to take a little break. I’m going back with Vanessa to our house for a little while.”

“Okay, that’s fine. See you guys soon then, and thanks for the coffee.”

“No problem,” Vanessa replies with a smile.

“Alright, see you soon. And if you need a break then be sure to take one,” Cole says, as he and Vanessa walk out.

  “Will do!” David replies.

Cole and Vanessa walk over to Cole’s car, get inside of it and drive off towards Cole’s house.

A short while later they arrive at Cole’s house and they go into the kitchen. Cole sits down at the dinner table and Vanessa gives him a couple of sandwiches on a plate. She then sits down as well and asks, “I heard from David’s grandpa that John came by, what did he want?”

Cole takes a big bite of his sandwich and replies, “He asked where the materials came from, and next to that, he wants to build a police station in Brown’s Creek. For better protection, you know.”

Vanessa takes a bite out of her sandwich as well and says, “Oh, well, I think it’s a good idea. Although we don’t need police protection, I think it’s good.”

“I think so too, that’s why we’re going to build it.”

“Alright then, but so he didn’t know where the materials came from either?”

“No, it’s just strange. No one knows.”

“Oh well, maybe it’s James or Igor.”

Cole almost chokes on his sandwich and replies, “Igor?! I wouldn’t count on it. He would only do that if it would benefit him as well.”

  “Yes, I guess you’re—”

But then the phone on the kitchen wall rings. Cole gets up, walks over to it and picks it up. “Hello?” Cole answers.

“Cole, nice to finally talk to you again! How is everything going? And how is my sister?”

“Brian, good to finally hear from you as well! Yeah, everything is going great here. What about you?”

“That’s good to hear, and yes, everything is going great for me as well. But how is Brown’s Creek looking? I heard you were trying to rebuild it.”

“Yeah, that’s right. It’s looking great. Almost all of the houses and shops are rebuilt and we’re even building more houses. By the time we’re done, Brown’s Creek is going to be bigger than Istokjort,” Cole replies with a smile. “But, I do have one question for you, did you send us all of the materials or?”

“No, I don’t know anything about that. So, you’re telling me that you don’t know who gave you all the materials to build?”

“I have no clue, really. Vanessa said it might be James, but I really don’t know.”

“Well, I don’t know either, but speaking of James, have you heard anything from him already? Or something more about the funeral?”

“Nothing yet, but I hope he shows up soon.”

“Yes, I hope so too. Let me know when he does. Anyway, I have to go again. It’s a busy life being the alpha,” Brian replies laughing. “Alright, see you soon in New York.”

“In New York? Why? What do you mean?”

“You’ll see,” Brian replies, as he hangs up.

Cole puts the phone away and sits back down at the dinner table. “And? Why did my brother call?”

“He just asked how everything was going. But, at the end he said, ‘See you soon in New York,’ what does he mean with that?”

“I don’t know, he didn’t explain what he meant with that?”

“No, that’s the thing. He hung up after that.”

“Well, maybe it’s about the company. Don’t forget that soon, you will be the new CEO of your father’s company.”

“Yeah, I know. But, how does that even work? Just like that, I’m going to be the new CEO? And next to that, I don’t even know how to use a computer and everything. So, how am I going to run an international company?”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure you will get training for those things. And next to that, I don’t know how you are going to be the new CEO just like that, but I’m sure with some magic or whatever everything will be taken care of.”

“But that would also mean we would have to move out to New York, right?”

“Maybe, I don’t know. Let’s just first wait for James and after that, we will see.”

  “Yeah, you’re right.”

Right at that moment, the doorbell goes. Cole gets up, walks over to the front door and opens it. “James?! Thank god you’re back!” Cole says, as he shakes James his hand.

With a smile, James replies, “Sorry it took me so long.”

“No problem, I’m just glad you’re back. Come in.”

Cole lets James in and they walk over to the kitchen. Vanessa immediately gives James a hug and James asks, “Hello, Vanessa. How are you doing?”

“I’m good, thank you. We were already wondering about when you would come back.”

“I know, it took a bit longer than it should have. But, shall we take a seat so we can discuss things?”
